After years of hype as “the next big thing,” in 2021 the moment has arrived for electric vehicles. Tesla is the most valuable auto manufacturer in the world, legislators in major markets have taken steps to dramatically curtail the sale of internal combustion engine cars, the White House is championing an aggressive expansion of charging infrastructure, and the urgency for action to materially combat climate change has never been higher.
My interest in this space is both personal and professional. Apart from being enthusiastic about the potential for business and new technology to address social issues, I am a first-time electric vehicle owner (having purchased a Tesla Model 3 in 2021). I also worked for a public electric vehicle charging company (Volta, 2019-2022). All opinions expressed here are my own, from publicly available sources, and unaffiliated with my “day job”.
Despite the tailwinds electric vehicles enjoy, much work remains to realize their true potential—hence my desire to comment upon, and share news about, how the business, political, and consumer sides of this issue continue to evolve.
